What is SKILL?

Skill is the state of having personal or practical knowledge. It is to be versed or practiced. In other words, it is to be an expert.

What is ACQUISITION? 

Acquisition is gotten from the word acquire. It is to get or to gain by someone's exertion or effort.

What is 'Skill acquisition' ? 

Syntactically, skill acquisition is the act and art of getting practical knowledge from the effort or the exertion of an expert. It is also acquiring skills from those who have full knowledge of that particular skill. We can acquire skills:

• when we are guided by a mentor 
• when we take a course on it 
• via blogs and books 
• in school etc.

There are various skills which teenagers and youths can acquire, in order to earn an honest living. Some of these lucrative skills include:

Mobile Phone Repairs

Around the world today, mobile phone is one of the widely used electronic devices. Mobile phone repair, is a very good skill to acquire in respect of earning a good living. It is opened for everyone to learn, and you can learn it within a time frame of 2 years, more or less, depending on your take up ability. Repairing mobile phones is one of the skill that has helped a lot of people and has actually emancipated them from poverty. The persons who have this skill are called mobile phone technicians or mobile phone engineers. There are two categories of mobile phone repair viz 

• hardware 
• software

The hard ware is the category that deals with the fixing of the physical parts of a mobile phone e.g. 

• Replacement of batteries 
• Replacement  of screen
• Replacement of charging port
• Changing of mouth piece, and other touchable parts of a mobile phone.

While the software is the category that deals with the programming part of a mobile phone e.g.

• Flashing and unlocking of phones
• Upgrading of phone versions e.t.c.

Graphics Designing 

What is graphic?

Graphics is simply a drawing or a picture, connected with designs, especially in the production of books and magazines.

Definition of design

Design, is the composition of a work of art. It is arranging the different parts of something that has been made, such as magazines, books, buildings e.t.c. 

Pertaining to this, a designer is someone who composes the work of art, and arrange the different parts of something that has been made. We have different types of designers, Such as: 

• Web designers 
• Graphic designers 
• Fashion designers 
• Architect

Web designers

Web designers are those that deal on the designing of websites.

Note: Web designers are different from web developers. 

Web designers only create a hint for the web developers in order for them not to get confused or make mistakes when developing websites. To acquire such skill requires little or no education.

Graphic designers

Graphic designers are those that use a drawing of picture connected with designs, to pass information. They are artists that create images for a specific purpose such as advertising. To acquire such skill, requires little or no education. Graphic designers deal on the designing of: 

• Birthday cards 
• Marriage cards 
• Invitation cards 
• Business cards 
• Banners, e.t.c.

Fashion Designing 

Fashion designers are those that compose a work of art with materials. They design clothing professionally. They are as well known as professional tailors. To be a fashion  designer, does not really require education or a high level of education.

An architect, is someone whose job is to design buildings or construction. He prepares plans and superintends construction. This part of designing requires education. 

Architecture is the profession of an architect. It is the art and science of designing and managing the construction of buildings and other structures. 

Acquiring Design skills is very helpful and can send one on a journey of financial independence, if willing. Most experts in this field do their designs with certain applications such as the 'autocad'. 

Automobile Repairs 

An automobile repair merchant or expert can be called a 'mechanic' and he is a skilled worker capable of building or repairing machinery. He is someone whose job is to repair machines, most especially the engines of motor vehicles. 

Automobile repairs is one of the most acceptable skills in the world with lot of rich benefits. And the good news is that this skill can be acquired both with and without any level of education. 

Baking 

Baking is an act, or the way in which something is baked. It is also the process of cooking, using dry heat in an oven. 

A baker is a person who sells baked items. Items, baked are:

• Cake
• Bread
• Meat (minced) pie e.t.c.

Baking services has offered a lot of help to young people, who had acquired the skill. It doesn't require any level of education to acquire baking skill, though it has its course in schools - universities & polytechnics. Some graduates & undergraduates learn baking as part of 'hospitality management'. Baking skill is one of the easiest to acquire, and it serves as an earning job to many. 

Hair Dressing 

Firstly, hair is a pigmented filament of keratin, which grows from a follicle on the skin of humans and other mammals. It is the substance that looks like a mass of fine thread growing especially on the head. Hair is a gift from God.

Dressing in terms of hair, is the maintaining and styling of hair.

What is hair dressing? 

This is the maintaining and styling of hair in various ways such as:

• Treating of hair
• Washing of hair
• Drying of hair
• Dreadlocks 
• Hair cut etc. 

The people who are involved in this skill, are called hair dresser or hair stylist. Hair styling, is one of the most favorable skill one can ever acquire. It has lifted so many people from their grassroots level.

People with these skill are highly demanded all over the world.

Note that: This is one of the best ways of earning a living with or without education for most persons around the world, even barbers/hairstylists. 

The Importance of Skill Acquisition 

• Acquiring skills in this generation is something I would advice everyone to do. Skill acquisition is very important in this modern age, and anyone who is not skilled has less value of himself, and he is valueless to the society as well. These are the various importance of skill acquisition: 

• When someone acquires a skill, he/she will become useful to him self, and that person automatically becomes self employed. When we are skilled, we can earn money with our different skills without employment opportunities from the government. Therefore a skilled worker can survive in a society where there is high level of unemployment. 

• When we acquire skills, it keeps us from committing crimes like: 

1. Robbery or Theft 
2. Kidnapping
3. Fraud e.t.c.

However, when a person is skilled, he is already self employed, and will not have the time to engage in criminal activities such as internet fraud.

• Another good advantage of skill acquisition, is creating job opportunities for yourself. When a person is skilled, he already has job opportunities, because many firms and companies are in need of skilled workers. E.g. when someone is a web designer, he has created employment opportunity for himself because there companies looking for web designers.

• When we have skills, we will be independent. Someone who has skills would not have to depend on anyone to survive, because he/she can become financially and materially stable.

• Also, the services of a skilled worker is needed by others in the society, and that will bring about the opportunity to earn.

Applications of skill acquisition in societal development

In every society, there should always be a free skill acquisition training program and centers for the less privilege, who would not have the money and privilege to acquire skills. When the less privilege in any society are many, and the society has a very high level of unemployment, they have no means of survival other than to acquire a skill else they will spend their years in penury, especially when without any form or level of education whatsoever. They may hit the streets, begging to feed themselves and the society will remain undeveloped, because they are likely experiencing bad governance, and without a skill, the society itself will suffer conditions such as low IGRs (internally generated revenues) and the likes.

Based on the above premises, there should be an application or a request of (free) skill acquisition programs in a society. Because when the number of skilled citizens of a country is high, (and they likely experiencing bad governance), the skilled citizens already have the key to earning money, and in this case, they will also have to develop the areas where they live or support the development of such areas in the little way they can, with or without the help of the government.

Skill acquisition is very important to humans, and those who acquire skills are important to themselves and to the society at large. Therefore, everyone is advised to learn or acquire a skill.
